Frequently Asked Questions
Why can't Klarity see some folders?
Some system folders are protected by macOS. To scan everything, grant Klarity "Full Disk Access" in System Settings → Privacy & Security → Full Disk Access. Without it, Klarity can still scan your home folder and most user-accessible locations.
Is my data sent anywhere?
No. Klarity runs 100% locally on your Mac. No data is collected, transmitted, or stored remotely. There are no analytics, no accounts, and no cloud services. See our Privacy Policy for details.
How do I drill down into a folder?
Double-click any folder in the treemap or icicle view to drill into it. Use the breadcrumb navigation at the top to go back up. You can also right-click any item for options like "Reveal in Finder" or "Drill Into".
Can I switch between visualization modes?
Yes. Go to Settings → Appearance → Disk Visualization and choose between Treemap (rectangles sized by file/folder size) or Icicle (stacked bars by hierarchy depth). Your preference is saved automatically.
Does Klarity delete files?
No. Klarity is a read-only analyzer — it only reads file metadata (names and sizes) to create visualizations. It never modifies, moves, or deletes any files. You can use the "Reveal in Finder" option to manage files yourself.
Can I monitor RAM usage?
Yes. Toggle "Show RAM" in Settings → Appearance → RAM Display Mode. Klarity will show real-time memory usage in the app. You can adjust the refresh interval in the same settings panel.
Does Klarity work with external drives and HDDs?
Yes. Klarity scans any mounted volume — internal SSDs, external SSDs, USB hard drives, and even network drives. Scan speed depends on the drive: internal SSDs are fastest (a full scan in seconds), external SSDs are nearly as quick, while traditional HDDs can take longer due to mechanical read speeds. For very large external drives (4 TB+), the initial scan may take a few minutes but you can browse results as they come in.
